Pacific Northwest Black and White Scapes

by Bruce Sanford

I find black and white shots are more difficult to capture since you lose the color dimension.  Pattern and contrast are the key elements, so that is what I look for in determining whether the picture will make the grade. All of these images were originally taken in color, then transferred to a black and white format.  There are many programs out there to achieve that purpose, and it's great fun using different black and white filters to achieve the "right look". The process in theory is no different than the old wet lab approach, but without all the chemicals.  In addition, the picture can be viewed prior to printing, which is much less frustrating than first developing the print and then deciding if that's what you wanted to create.  I believe that Ansel Adams would love this approach.

These pictures, as with all the other shots on this website, cannot do justice to the real printed image, which is much more dramatic and inspiring.  However, it does give some examples of the available images.  Click on the thumbnail to view a larger version.
